Interiors Inspired By Autumn
Fall is here, and with it comes cozy nights, revisiting Stars Hollow, and, naturally, a Gilmore Girls marathon. 😊 As the leaves change and the temperatures turn crisp, so do the color palettes, spaces, and textures we’re naturally drawn to.
While we design and furnish our Charlotte projects to be enjoyed and lived in year-round, there are certain spaces and design choices that feel especially fitting for fall. This time of year, we find ourselves gravitating toward warmer, richer palettes featuring browns, blacks, deep greens, navy and wood tones. Materials like leather, velvet, and cable knit add even more warmth and texture as we transition into the cooler months.
Fireplaces and cozy living spaces also take center stage as we begin spending more time indoors, whether that means settling in with a warm blanket and a cup of apple cider or gathering around the fireplace for a movie night. And then there's the bedroom. As temperatures drop, bedding should change. Layers of warm bedding, plush textures, and cozy materials make the bedroom feel even more comfortable and welcoming on chilly nights.
This month, we're sharing some of our favorite spaces that capture the warmth, richness, and coziness we love about fall.
Browns & Blacks
Nothing really says “autumn” like a warm, inviting space and a brown and black color palette. Whether used separately or together, these colors bring depth and contrast to a room while still feeling cozy and welcoming.
Rich wood tones bring an earthy, natural feel to a room. When paired with black, they can soften its boldness and create a beautiful balance between the two. Black, on its own, adds depth and sophistication to a space, while also providing a striking counterpoint to warmer woods and softer finishes.
From dark wood cabinetry and furniture to black islands, countertops, lighting, and tile, these tones can be incorporated in a variety of ways without making a room feel overly dark. We especially love pairing them with softer elements like creamy whites, warm neutrals and natural textures to create a balance that feels layered and lived-in. Our Beaver Dam kitchen, Finding Forever On Abingdon primary bathroom and kitchen and our Dansing On Providence eat-in kitchen are perfect examples of how these rich, autumn-inspired tones can come together in a space.
Greens & Blues
While greens and blues also made an appearance in Our Favorite Summer Color Palettes blog, there are shades of both that feel especially suited to fall. These deeper, fuller hues bring a little more richness than their lighter summer counterparts while remaining versatile enough to work beautifully across a variety of spaces.
An earthy green is one of our favorite colors for fall, especially when used in unexpected ways, like the backsplash in our Bulaful Home kitchen. In both our Life on Longview and Beaver Dam projects, we incorporated deep navy blue into the kitchen island and powder room vanity, respectively, adding a perfect pop of color without overwhelming the space. In our Asheford Green dry bar, we paired the green-gray cabinetry with a dramatic black book matched countertop and coordinating black and brass hardware.
Fireplaces and Living Spaces
While color palettes may be a major factor in fall-inspired interiors, so are the spaces themselves, especially those centered around a fireplace. There is nothing quite like cozying up by the fire with a cup of warm cider and a good movie or football game (Go Cocks!) as the days get shorter and the nights get chillier.
Our White Christmas, Bulaful Home, and Life on Longview living spaces were all designed and furnished with the fireplace serving as a focal point. Natural stone, warm wood mantels, and comfortable sofas and seating create inviting spaces that encourage everyone to gather, relax, and enjoy the season together.
Materials
When it comes to autumn-inspired spaces, materials are a major part of creating that warm and inviting feeling. Think rich leathers, soft velvets, chunky cable knits, cozy wool, and natural woods. These textures add dimension and warmth to a space, making it feel even more inviting as we transition into cooler months.
We love incorporating these elements in both big and small ways. Leather accent chairs bring warmth to the Beaver Dam sunroom, while velvet swivel chairs add softness and texture to the Made in Montibello family room. A chunky cable knit throw brings an extra layer of coziness to the Life on Longview sunroom, and the woven leather counter stools in the Firethorne kitchen add dimension and texture to the space.
Bedding
There’s nothing like getting into a plush, cozy bed on a cool autumn night, right?! Creating that warm and inviting bed does take a little extra love and attention, and it all comes down to the layers.
Our favorite combination for the cooler months is a warmer duvet paired with a lighter matelassé. It adds warmth when you need it while giving the bed a beautifully layered, textured look. Add a few cozy pillows and a soft throw, just like in our Dansing On Providence bedroom and you have the perfect fall space.
